Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching or carving away parts to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath.

I hand make tiles and use Velvet underglaze to carve to create the design I want. The tile is bisque fired. Afterward, a clear glaze is sprayed on top and the piece was fired again. The clay is a porcelain-like stoneware and fired to ^5-6. The tile is mounted in a black wood frame to show off the work. A hanger is attached and 4 small felt pads have been added to protect the frame and the wall.
